*L.E.S.

LES not plural for “the” in Spanish or French but initials for Lower East Side. Hey, even the districts have gotten fancy. Today I went to LES to pick up my eye glasses on Orchard and Delancey. I strayed far from home (Midtown) and had time to spare before the glasses were ready.
I walked Rivington and Ludlow Streets and a few blocks east on Delancey to relive my childhood. The Essex Market where my father bought us “bones”(smoked fish bones) was now indoor bodegas, and some nouveau gourmets stands. I checked out the fish market and butcher and the prices are definitely lower. I saw an interesting new cookie stand which I blatantly approached for a “goodie” concept for us. Waiting for an answer from Josh and will keep you advised.
I passed an old candy store where my parents used to take my sister and I, and I had to buy HOPJES. You remember the coffee candy from Holland. I paid for my half pound, left the store to hurry and pop one in my mouth. It was better than expected. This candy was a staple in our house along with chocolate covered jelly rings, and marshmallow twists. In fact I called my Mom in Florida to tell her where I was and what I was eating. She asked me to mail her a pound of Hopjes.
It was nice to walk the path of my childhood, but it was nicer to arrive home. I believe in reliving the past, but I truly believe it’s more wonderful to live in the present.

Our friends at Zio Ristorante on West 19th Street between Fifth/Sixth Avenues will give free dessert (one per couple) with the mention of redlipsticknyc at time of reservation. The food is delicious, the staff friendly and Roberto and Darren are there to make you feel welcome.

For those who enjoy a drink closer to the clouds, 230 Fifth Avenue, has shortened your wait time to get in. NO LINE WAITING on Friday, Saturday or Halloween. Just mention redlipsticknyc to the doorman, and presto, the seas part and the elevator awaits you. This venue is a four sided view of Manhattan, with a gorgeous wait staff, and if you get chilly, don’t worry, they provide RED robes for your comfort.
